Deputy Lieutenant of the County receives Honorary Award
The University of Hertfordshire has awarded Jo Connell OBE DL an honorary doctor of letters in recognition of her outstanding record of public service in Hertfordshire, in particular her contribution to charity and long-standing relationship to the University.
Having reached the top in the world of information technology, businesswoman Jo Connell has also used her professional skills to make a real difference to the local community – most notably through her charity work with older people and her contribution to the University’s success, as Chair of the Board of Governors for more than a decade. In 2012 she received an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List for services to older people, principally through her work with Help the Aged for 18 years.
Commenting on receiving her award, Jo said: “I am proud to have been associated with the University of Hertfordshire for 13 years and see it develop into the remarkable institution it is today. This honour enables me to continue that association for many years to come".
At the ceremony on Wednesday 19 November – held in the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St. Albans – Jo received her honorary degree alongside over 5,500 new graduates celebrating academic success.
In reading the citation, Professor Quintin McKellar, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hertfordshire, said: “Education is one of Jo’s passionate interests and it was her belief that learning opens up opportunities in life that led to her association with the University of Hertfordshire. I am delighted to present to her the award of honorary doctor of letters.”
The University has also shown its appreciation to eleven other pillars of the community by awarding honorary degrees for outstanding contribution to academic disciplines, charity, professions or public service – presented by Lord Salisbury, Chancellor of the University of Hertfordshire; Professor Quintin McKellar, Vice-Chancellor; Professor Ian Campbell, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Mr Richard Beazley, Pro Chancellor.
