The Prince Arthur Cup is played every year at Walton Heath and was contested on May 17th between 49 livery companies.Conditions were excellent, strong sun and a slight easterly wind to make conditions interesting.
Our pairings were Geoff Unwin (captain )/ Dave Robertson and Ted Rees/Peter Cordery . Dave was making his first appearance in the competition having deservedly won his place in our own qualifying competition which was held in March. We were teamed up to play with the Insurers and the Feltmakers over 36 holes, but the competition is actually played against the course. It’s foursomes ( as a pair you take alternate shots )and you either win (+),lose (-) or half (0) against the par on any hole, that’s it. The format is not often used, but as we can attest over the years,it’s psychologically tough .This year,as in the previous year, not a single livery company managed to “beat the course “ and end up with a positive score. The best score was minus 2. In the morning round we played the Old Course which is the tougher of the two, Geoff/Dave carded minus 3, Ted/Peter minus 2 putting the team at minus 5. The afternoon we played the New Course, Geoff/Dave managed to “beat the course" on plus 1, Ted/Peter scored minus 4 giving a score for the day of minus 8 , a good improvement on the previous year’s minus 17.
The winners were the the Barbers on minus 2, followed by the International Bankers -3, and then the Mercers -4. A huge turn round for the Barbers who were last in 2017. So much for my bad joke about the Barbers being in danger of not making the cut !!
Overall, we came 7th, our best result in recent years and a big improvement on 2017 when we came 23rd.
After the match , having captained the team for a few years I decided it was time to hand over the captaincy, which I did to Ted Rees , who I know will do a great job.
We are always looking to refresh the team,so if any keen golfer fancies taking part in this unusual and prestigious competition we hold a qualifying competition in March, which in itself is great fun. Just email Ted with a few details, club and handicap to : email@example.com
It has been a privilege to captain the team, great fun and fantastic camaraderie.
