10/10/2007
Former IBM UK Holdings Director to Lead Livery Company as Colin Knight Steps Down
London 11 October 2007: David Morriss has become Master of the Information Technologists’ Company following a ceremony on 3 October. David has worked in the IT industry since 1966 holding several positions within IBM and consultancy roles following his retirement. He replaces Colin Knight following his year’s tenure.
In his role as Master, David will be responsible for continuing to ensure that the 2010 agenda forms the framework of the company’s activities, whilst also updating the agenda to make sure it is as relevant today as when it was conceived. He will aim to move the company forward through its planned change in governance, and raise the level of fundraising to match ITC’s increased charity work.
On a more personal level David aims to meet as many of ITC’s members through the activities that they undertake, and bring ITC closer to the City of London and its many facets such as the Lord Mayor, Mansion House, the Corporation of London and other Livery companies.
A member of the British Computer Society since 1974, and President in the year 2004/5, David worked with IBM for 31 years holding managerial positions throughout the UK and Europe including UK General Manager of the Central and Northern Region and Group Director of Market Development for EMEA. In 1987 he was appointed director of IBM UK Holdings and was a member of the EMEA management board.
Since his retirement David has remained active in the IT industry working as a consultant for companies such as Manpower Inc and Hogg Robinson Group and as the Chairman of firms such as Waterfields Ltd. and Kingston Call Centres.
“I am proud to be able to offer my knowledge and time to ITC in order to bring the benefits of IT to the disadvantaged”, says David. “As a modern Livery Company I will strive to maintain the values of 800 years of tradition while ensuring that we move forward and continue to promote IT as a profession through training and education.”
Michael Grant, clerk of the Information Technologists’ Company commented “David’s year as Master got off to a memorable start when he jointly hosted a dinner celebrating his installation as Master and 15 years as a Livery Company. The dinner for more than 300 guests was held in the City of London Guildhall. He was joined by the President of the British Computer Society (BCS), Prof.Nigel Shadbolt, whose organisation was also celebrating, with its 50th Anniversary.”
