The Information Technologists Company’s (ITC) partner school; The Lilian Baylis Technology School in Lambeth has achieved a number of prestigious awards recently. The schools head teacher Gary Phillips was awarded the Seiff award, while the school itself has been awarded the ITC mark and has achieved its best ever GCSE results this year.
In the recently released secondary schools’ league tables Lilian Baylis was the most improved in London with 36% of Year 11 students achieving 5 or more GCSEs at grades A*-C up from just 2% in 2002, when ITC began its partnership with the school. It has also achieved outstanding key stage three results with over 50% of pupils achieving a level five or above in English and science and more than 57% achieving level five or above in maths.
Lilian Baylis has also been awarded the ICT mark, which is a national accreditation scheme recognising schools that are achieving the required standard and implementing recognised good practice in their use of technology. This award goes hand in hand with the IT specialism that ITC has helped the school achieve.
In January 2005 Lilian Baylis was awarded specialist status and changed its name to Lilian Baylis Technology School. ITC along with the Mercers’ Company provided the £50,000 funding required as part of the application for specialist school status. Gary Phillips the schools headmaster was instrumental in this process.
The Seiff award given to Gary Phillips recognises the achievement of outstanding individuals in the community who have collaborated successfully with businesses to benefit both businesses and society. Gary has been headmaster since 2002, during this time he has engaged social workers, family therapists, counselling, ICT facilities and reflexology businesses with the school. He also arranged for the school to host visits from business leaders as part of the HRH Business Community Seeing is Believing programme.
Gary Phillips comments, “ITC’s support has been invaluable in turning this school around, since achieving the technology specialism the school has gone from strength to strength. These recent successes show what can be achieved when a successful company gets behind a failing school.”
Michael Grant, ITC’s clerk adds, “We are extremely proud of our work with the Lilian Baylis Technology School and are delighted with their recent accolades.”
